Still not making progress

Ok, so my $10 bonus got paid out, but it coincided with a pretty big SNG down swing. I lost a whole bunch in a row and then started playing HU PLO and then losing there too. In the end, I'm about even after last night.

I made $11 last night for finishing 7th in a 180-man tourney. Pretty disappointing, although I was probably lucky all in all to have even gotten that far. I won a couple flips late for my tournament life. Midway through the tourney I lost two huge pots with QQ to another guy's AA AIPF, and then a couple hands later I called an all in with A9 and the other guy had AQ, but I had him covered by a bunch. I was able to come back from those and make a late surge up the money ladder. I eventually busted out with AK to QQ. I was close to some real money, but even if I had won that flip, I still would have been a long shot.

I thought I played pretty focused poker. My laptop has shit out on me, so that I pretty much can't do anything on it but play poker. Instant messaging doesn't work, the internet locks up. Even the sound comes and goes. Given that, I have to pay a little more attention to what's going on. Definitely not good to play this way when trying to do other things, but if I'm just sitting down to play poker, it's not a bad way to go about it.

I've got a taste for the MTT now. Hope I have time to take one down this weekend.

A little better

Pokerwise, things have gone a little better. Started to gain momentum in some SNGs and then even when that started to tank, I made up for it with PLO cash winnings (for once). I ended up just having one of those sessions where I flopped a set every time and hit all of my flush draws. I guess it's bound to happen if you're just used to getting beaten over the head.

The SNGs this weekend were pretty soft, at least softer than usual, due to SNG madness. I think people end up playing more tables than they're used to, so on any given table, there are at least a couple pushbots who either soar or implode within the first 20 hands or so. I won a couple, but it should have been more. There was at least a $5 that I should have won, but ended up in second because of less than optimal play on my part. I didn't win anything in the raffle, but I did win an entry into a freeroll that takes place late Saturday afternoon. It's open to people who won two SNGs over SNG madness. First place is a little less than $5k, and there are about 16,000 entrants, with 3000 or so getting paid. I will just be happy to cash of course. We'll see how it goes. Tough to say I'm due.

The MTTs have not been going as well lately, but I don't think I've played as many. I'm trying to get the FTP holiday bonus. FTP's first deposit bonus is really the best because they give you a lot of time to generate money to get paid back some bonus money. These current offers only give you 30 days, which, at the stakes I play, pretty much gives me a chance to win the first incremental payout, which is $10. I'm at about $8.60 or so with 10 days left, so I'll hit it. Probably this weekend.

Then, it will take a portion off my rakeback, I know. I feel like I should do something with the bonus money though - like put it into a satellite, or even just roll it into an SNG. I rarely take those shots though, and when I do, I've usually been drinking and the results are disastrous. For whatever reason $10 SNGs hate me. I've won a $20 before, but never a $10, I don't think.

Disappointing Thoughts

Well, let me start by saying that I won the case on Wednesday, but not the way I thought. When I got in, a lot of things took place that I didn't think were going to take place, and once everything got sorted out, we made the right decisions and got the victory. It wasn't as satisfying for me to do it this way, on a personal level, but getting the victory is always nice. Kind of like playing heads up for massive money, and hitting a couple two outers to win it. Kind of. Not really though. Because when I hit the 2 outer, I feel like it's owed to me for all the bad beats.

But the disappointing thoughts lately really stem from that run in the daily dollar. I reviewed the hand again and it's clear that I flat made the wrong decision. for the amount of chips it was worth, I had clearly just made a snap decision while being really tired and after having a couple cocktails. A friend was over and we agreed to split half our winnings with each other, and it's clear to me that my play probably disappointed him more than me, since he was eager to get his hands on his $5 share of the amount I actually won.

I should post the hand, although it's like if someone pissed in your coffee, recorded you drinking it, and then put the video of it on youtube. Basically, I had 500k chips at 600/1200. Reeeediculous for me call an all in on the flop - or any flop - without the absolute mutha f'n nuts.

I think to myself if I was in the main event of the WSOP (which had a smaller field size than the tourney I was in) would I make the same play? I say no. Because you actually have to physically move the chips in, which takes much more deliberate action than just button clicking.

Even if I had simply walked away from the keyboard and just played aces, I probably could have finished in the teens.

I think about the moments in retrospect all the time, but of course for whatever reason, I keep doing it when I get into the moment. Just not able to find the fold button. Something is wrong with me, I think. I get into a moment where I get impulsive and do not act totally rationally. I need to work on this.

More MTTS

My bankroll has been slowly dwindling, but mostly because of some bad luck combined with the fact that I'm playing more MTTs. I went really deep in the daily dollar on Saturday into Sunday and finished a disappointing 73rd out of over 10k participants. I was put to a decision for all my chips holding top pair top kicker with AQ on a Q high flop. I could have and ultimately should have folded it to his AA. I did not sit out and really think about it, which is my biggest problem playing online. I saw Hachem talk about a hand almost exactly like this that he laid down back in the 2005 main event. I just focused on whether he'd make that move with KQ and how many chips I would have had if I was able to hit. It was a long grind. I feel like if I do it enough, I can make it back there.

The next day, I signed up for a $2.25 MTT and also cashed finishing 40th or so out of 700 people for basically a min cash. The bustout hand was my 99 shoved into AQ and I was good until he rivered an inside straight. The Q would actually not have helped him since it would have given me a straight. So he hit a 7 outer, which was disappointing. I did not think I did anything wrong in the hand - possibly the only thing I would have done different was call and shove any flop, but there were lots of people to act behind me, that I didn't feel safe just calling his raise. It is encouraging though to see some results out of it.

I pleaded a kid out in court today for whom I had beaten all of his previous cases. I have very mixed feelings about this for a lot of reasons. One being that what started off as a really good deal turned into a meh deal, and that he will likely find a way to end up doing a sentence. The kid is personally at a pretty volatile stage in his life and I hope him the best. The other reason I feel bad about pleading him is the fact that I felt like I could beat the case, but the kid wanted it all over and done with so he could walk. But for how long is the real question?

Pats lost yesterday. Whatever. I trust Belichick, even though he's getting skewered. He's seen his defense let him down so many times. I really can't fault him for making the call, even if it turned out to be wrong.

All of these things are really tough decisions. You have to weigh unknowns, probabilities that cannot be determined with 100% certainty. I think it is always interesting to be in those types of situations, although it is not always an enviable position to be in. Ultimately, those are the things that make life interesting I think. A bit scary at times depending on what's at stake, but interesting nonetheless.

Anyways - trial Wednesday. At least I get a chance to stand up and fight. Winning (at least SOMETHING for ONCE) is always nice though.

Old news

So I won $90 in a $2 tourney for finishing in 5th. So ridiculously disappointing. I was in control and blew it when I couldn't lay down KK to an A high flop. No question I should have folded. Weird because I was laying hands like that down the entire way, and just fucked it up when we got to the final table - when it really matters. When moving up in the money actually means something to my bankroll. OOOOOOHHHH WELLL, right? Since I make it to final tables all the time, then no regrets!!! Get 'em next time! (SARCASM)

So I decided to try and see if I could run the money up. WTF, right? At the stakes I play, I'm sitting on a pile of dough. My recent cashout made almost no difference in my bankroll compared to the stakes I play. So I played a $5, lost. A $10, lost, and a $30 HU game and lost when I was all in pre-flop with a hand that was dominated. Oh well.

Been reading Dan Brown's new book lately, so I haven't been playing a lot of poker. Brown's books are always very fast paced, interesting, and easy to sink into. It's a mix of real science and a frantic, significant, fictional story. Funny that during the most suspenseful parts - much like a person shielding their eyes from a horror movie - I find myself reading over the words faster just to get the gist of it. I don't think any of his books will be as good as Da Vinci Code, only because of its subject matter, but this one's REALLY good so far, and I'm about half way through it. I find it interesting that the subject matter of this book is an extension of the the most interesting non-Holy Grail topic of Da Vinci Code.

Reading his books always makes me wonder about how great pieces of artwork from the past "become" great works. A painting, is a painting, right? Paint on canvas. But we give it significance. It's one thing to say that a picture "looks" good. We have photos now that are everywhere that almost universally, people can look at a picture and say it "looks" good. But the truly great pieces of art are held in such reverence, and why? I can't figure it out. I just chalk it up to the fact that I don't know enough about the subject matter, which is probably true to a certain extent.

Shakespeare, Mozart, Da Vinci - we have held on to these works, and hold their works in the highest esteem. Dan Brown would suggest we do this for a reason other than that it "looks good". Anyways, some meta-relfection here - How will the future look at Dan Brown's books?

Obviously, it's not a historical document. It's basically fiction. Will history pass it off as a sign of the times? Or is his work something that will endure, and if it does, for what reason? His books are enormously popular, but popularity does not necessarily mean they will be timeless.

Anyways, I enjoy them.

Cruising

Won three straight SNGs last night. Can't remember the last time that happened. Of course they were of the $2 variety, so it's relatively little money. But a solid $20 profit on $2 games? I'll take it. I will probably end up taking a shot at a $5 again in a bit - maybe two.

The cards are falling my way. I think I won both coinflip situations, and a 60-40, and my dominating hands held up. But it's not that I'm getting great cards. Sure I'm getting decent cards deep, but not getting AA every hand. And it's not so much the cards I'm getting as the timing of the good cards. Getting very strong cards early in an SNG is dangerous if you're not willing to let go of them. Late, the decisions are much easier. All three games went the same way - I was low stacked in or around the money, then shoved fairly strong hands and ended up being the favorite.

I did lose with TT to 44, so it's not as if I won every hand. I think I was just able to avoid the suckouts. In the last game, I hit a huge three-way all in with 88 vs. 55 vs. AJ and was able to hold.

Been keeping up in the Take 2 challenge. If I play every day for the rest of the month, I will amass 23 days of play. But after I hit the bonus on day 15, the next bonus is at 25 days, which I will not be able to make. Right now, I'm at 9 days. I'll play tonight and get a $10 bonus....weeeeeee!

I think I'll wait until after I get the Take 2 money to do the cashout.

The one good thing about the Take 2 is that it's getting me to play some cash games. And as Herm Edwards would say - You play to win the game! You don't just play it to qualify for the Take 2! And I think I've turned a modest profit in the games, and am getting more confident in my reads. I still bet too much with the nuts.

Couple things that I think I've improved on - one is not being afraid to sit down with a big stack at the table. I used to avoid tables with guys sitting with $7 because they'd just buy every pot from me. I'm better at picking my spots against these players now, evaluating which hands have good value to see a flop and hit a big one. Because it's PLO and not NL, there's a lot more you can do to control the size of the pot, even if you don't have a really deep stack. I've been basically forced to play with bigstacks though because the micro tables are usually full, so you just gotta get in where you fit in.

The other is getting away from marginal hands. In PLO, at least at the stakes I play, this is absolutely key. It's probably the #1 most important thing in the entire game. Hand values just don't transfer from NLHE. It's a completely different game from a hand-evaluation standpoint, reading the board, etc.

Couple things I have not been able to do well is bet-size appropriate on the turn. I still have a lot of difficulty figuring out where I am. If someone's on a flush draw and I bet pot, are they getting really good value to call that bet and float to the river? I generally like keeping pots small until I have a good sense of where I'm at. And in PLO, there's a lot of value in betting small to protect against your opponent hitting his spade on the river. And when it does come, you can get away from the hand at that point. It's almost like buying insurance. At these stakes, guys are gonna call. You may even want to consider just checking a set or dummy straight. The other is set over set. When I have the under, and there are not obvious straights or flushes, I will probably go broke.

If the next couple sessions go well, maybe I'll move up to 2/5 cent and see how it goes. Maybe one table of 2/5. I know that my game is not suited to play against people who play big and play for "real" money. I will absolutely get bullied. In order to be a great player in PLO, you must be able to raise with a wide, wide variety of hands on every street. I like to limp to see a lot of flops. That won't happen the higher up you go.

Up and down

It's been a while since I last blogged. Pokerwise, things have gone way up and way down. I'm still toiling in the $2 games. I had a really hot run in $2 SNGs and then decided to switch to $5, and then tumbled downward. I guess my luck had run out. It's been quite a while since I've actually won an SNG - just not hitting hands when I get 3 handed, losing flips, etc. Overall, I'm about even.

I've started to play more PLO cash .01/.02, mostly because of the Take 2 promotion FTP has going. Basically, if you two table-cash games 25 out of 30 days in the month, they will give you $50. At the stakes I play, I would seriously have to try to lose that much in a month. Luckily, the games have been profitable for right now, albeit profitable for 1/2 cent games. Maybe I'll "take a shot" at 2/5 cent one of these days.

I didn't play at all for the first week of this month, so I can't get $50, but if I play 15 out of 30 days, I get $25. They will probably penalize my rakeback again.

I'm doing horribly in MTTs. Been a while since a decent cash. I think I'm due, but I just don't have the time or energy to play them anymore.

I'm considering a hefty cashout, since I am not playing any higher with a bigger bankroll, and since there is some uncertainty about banks and online poker. I'm thinking of taking out about half my roll, since I'm afraid there may come a day that I won't see any of it, then this will have been all for naught.

The new FTP update is terrible

Just awful. It is so ridiculously slow. Impossible to do anything. No reason to play higher than a couple bucks because you will lose it. Last two games, I got heads up, only for FTP to completely cut out on me so I get blinded off. Unncecessary frustration. Forget about trying to run ANY other application along with FTP.

This may be enough to make me switch to Stars. This is awful. Poker is not enjoyable on FTP this way. So ridiculously slow, and cutting out at the most crucial time. Not liking this.

Been a while

Swamped at work, but still played every day except for one day.

Playing more at PLO cash, but tough to tell whether I'm up or down in it. Still playing the $2 SNGs. Playing badly in the $5s.

Cashed out a third of my BR after needlessly flaming out of two $1 MTTs very close to the money. So stupid. I think I did the right thing by cashing out. Will continue to grind regardless.

Breaking the Streak

Like Cal Ripken, I'm going to voluntarily sit out of poker on April 1 just to make sure I don't have to work for the 1 a day freeroll. I qualified in March, and will play that freeroll.

Work has been much busier, and same with home stuff and I don't want to feel tied down to play. It's easier not to feel tied down when you don't qualify right off the bat compared to when you're 20 days in and figure you've only got 10 more to go.

Didn't win anything in SNG madness. not a surprise since I only won two. Literally just bouncing the BR back and forth between 2 numbers.

Good friend, Mike E - seeing him play more on FTP. LAst night was on IM with him while I was playing and sending my hands. I really took an interest in letting him know my thought process through hands. It turned out to be semi-interesting because he was pretty critical of my tight play early on, and got blinded down, but started to wail on people later when I caught AA and AK. Finished second. He also finished second in a 45-man $1 SNG. He ran like god.

Does someone at FTP read this blog?

So, right after I blog about FTP not having microstakes, boom, microstakes.

Now, right after blogging about not being able to play MTTs because of the start times, boom, more $1 MTTs.

I may now actually be able to play one tonight. There's a huge $1 at 8:15 pm now with a first place prize around 1500. I'll try it tonight. It may actually give me some good practice with mega huge fields. It's a double stack too.

Second in a SNG last night. Played some PLO microstakes. Should have left up about a dollar 40, but ended up down 11 cents chasing a flush draw on my last hand.

Not a good month

Pretty bad month pokerwise. If not for the win in the $20 SNG, I'd be way behind. The way I've been running is pretty frustrating.

Last night played a $2 SNG and went out in 9th place in about 10 hands. Second hand I had AK UTG, limped, and the guy right next to me RRAI. He had just lost the first pot of the game, but it was way too big for me to call that early in the tourney, so I laid it. Next hand, I get T4 in the BB with some limpers. Flop comes T8x. I chose to check, and it checked around. No way to tell whether someone has KT or AT or even QT, JT there so no need to bet. Turn is a 4h, so I hit my two pair, and 2 hearts on the board. I check with the intent to check raise, he bets, others fold, and I raise a little. I've got the best hand, and I figure no reason to scare him off this pot. I want him to call in this spot, so I raise to like 300 or so and he calls.

River Kh. I bet 120 into a pot of like 680 or so. With the small bet, I'd like a call, but it'd hopefully be able to tell me if the guy backdoored a flush or something. I'm geting called by a huge range of hands here, including KQ, etc. Opponent min raises to 240 and now I've got a decision. I was pretty sure I had the best hand, but now I'm not. He's making it cheap for me. 120 more and I have about 800 behind. I probably figure I'm beat, but he's making it east for me to call, and I do. He shows K8 for a rivered better 2 pair.

Couple hands later, I get 99, limp, get RRAI, and must fold. Two hands later, get 77 in mid pos, raise, get shipped the rest of my 640 stack or so, call, and he has TT.

I played two games this morning that went about the same way. The first game, I went out in 5th I think. Pretty card dead through it. Interesting spot where I held 55 and limped into a pot and got at least 2 others to come along. Flop is 594 rainbow or some such. I checked flop, and they checked behind. Turn is 7h, putting two hearts on the board. Since I don't like the card, I bet like 200 into a pot of 240. Then get raised and and then the third guy RRAI. I am scared of 68 and fold. The guy who raised me indeed had the 68, and the other guy had 77 and rivered a 4 for a fullhouse.

Almost like two hands later, I get 99, raise, SB calls, others fold. Flop is an uninteresting 963 for top set. Pot is 450, and that's what the SB bets. I ship, he insta calls with TT. Turn is a 7, giving him some more outs, and the river is a putrid T to give him a better set.

The last game I played this morning, I feel like I played well again - made some good laydowns with AJ, I think. We get 5 handed and I'm in the BB with about 1k left and blinds at 80/160. I'm in the BB and the SB is the other short stack. I've been pretty tight. He ships into me, and I call with AK and he has A3. Once I see the K hit the turn, I think I'm good (I'm also trying to change my daughter while playing) but then look up only to see the chips slide his way when the river comes a third heart and he takes it with a flush.

I am glad that these are just $2 games, but they are getting annoying. I find I don't have time to play a lot of MTTs anymore, so this is pretty much it.

Fading the outs

Kind of a crazy weekend pokerwise. I played a ton, seems like. Started off pretty badly, just back on the same kind of downswing that I've kinda been on. Then, took a flyer on a $20 SNG, and got ridiculously hit by the deck and won it. That turned a lot of stuff around. I should post some hands fromthat session.

What a big swing. If I had lost it, my BR would have been where it was like two months ago, and all the grinding in between would have been all for naught. Instead, I won it, and my BR is at a new high.

Cashed in the one-a-day freeroll for $2. I had a spot, where UTG min raised, the guy next to him shoves, I'm in mid pos with KK, and shove, and UTG calls and am up against AK and AA. Did not hit the one outer and was drawing dead by the turn. At least it's something.

I also made a deep run in the $1 tourney. Not a whole lot to report. Just had good hands hold, and was able to create big pots with them, either by limp/shoving or just getting RR with worse hands. Also didn't play junk and got away from AJ fairly easy. KK was my lucky hand in that one - double late with it a couple times.

I made a stupid semi-bluff play that cost me about a third of my stack when we got around two tables. I hit bottom pair with junk and tried to push my opponent off his hand, and couldn't. I had about 100k to start the hand, and was knocked down to 67k.

The for-all-intents-and-purposes bustout hand came when I had JTss OTB in an unraised pot. I had about 25k chips left, and shoved, and the BB called with 66. Would have been nice to take that, but I bricked, eventually taking 12th and $11. First was like 280, so that kind of sucked. The tourney field was about 1300 though, so it is an accomplishment of sorts I guess. Next time maybe.

I take that back

OK, when I made my post yesterday about being up or down on the month, I didn't really think about the fact that there was 2/3rds of the month left.

I won an SNG today, and finished third in one last night. The most disappointing thing about the third place one is that I feel like I just gave up. Like I didn't want to play anymore with 2k chips three handed, so I went a little crazy. There WAS one guy who kept hitting great cards. He started as the low stack three handed, and doubled through the chipleader with AK vs. KQ when the flop came K high. Then a few hands later, I dumped chips to him when I held KT vs. his AT and the flop came T high.

I am relatively happy, however that I was able to make a comeback and win the SNG this morning. I crippled myself early by overplaying 55 in blind on blind action. I was down to about 500-600 in chips. It is a good thing my opponent shoved river to make it an easy fold for me. Then I doubled through the same guy with KK. I was at about 600, blinds at 50-100. I just raised to 3oo UTG, even though I'm pretty much pot committed. I feel like shoving makes an an easy fold for marginal hands, and I'm going to get it all in on the flop anyways, so I don't care if others come along. BB calls with QT and I held.

That got me back into good shape. The next major hand, I think we're at 60-120. I've got about 3.1k chips, and UTG was the only stack that could effectively bust me, and I think he had 2.8 or something. We're like 5 handed at this point. He limps UTG. I think there's one caller, but he's a pretty low stack, and does not affect how the hand plays out. I check my option in the BB with J4 os.

Now, UTG has flipped up AA like 4 times and commented about how crazy that was. He even asked me (for reasons I do not understand) "hey, actzeng - isn't that crazy?". Anyways, with that in mind, the flop comes JT4, two hearts. I check with the intention of check raising him. Of course, I want him to either have AA or represent AA in this spot, which I think he will do. He bets about half the pot, 240, I think, and the other guy gets out of the way. I min raise him, hoping to induce a push by an overpair. He RR 1.2k and I put him in for the rest, and he flips over KT for nothing but second pair. I held.

That gave me close to 7k 4 handed, and the rest kind of just played itself out. I had about the same stack going into HU, and my opponent had about 4k. I picked up AQ HU at 1-200 and raised to 600. Of course my opponent GOES BERSERK AND MASSIVE RERERERAISES ALL IN WITH A9!!!! And I held. Then I had to get ready for work.

Reset

Totally wasn't into playing yesterday. So I didn't really. I did the $1 6 max which was a total fucking rollercoaster ride that busted out in the first half hour. Such is life, however.

The weekend was really, really nice weather-wise though. Went for a walk in the park with wife and baby. It's great to watch her grow up. She's verbalizing now, which is interesting. She's just going - dadaddadaDODODODADAddadaa. Of course she has no idea what she's saying, but that's ok.

I had her touch my chin hair yesterday which made her laugh. That was really funny. I also broke out the grill yesterday and had some BBQ chicken with potato salad for the first time in god knows how long. And it's snowing right now - go figure.

This month will probably be my first losing month in 7. I had six consecutive profitable months which was a record for me, so I guess that's how these things go sometimes. I'd have to make a deep MTT score or go on a sick run, neither of which I think will happen. I also qualified for the one-a-day freeroll again, so we'll see how things go in that. I did pretty well in the last one, and there is zero reason for me not to have cashed.

Drawing Dead

That should be the name of a band/album, or even a poker book. Maybe a fictional crime/poker/drama book or movie. Starring Tommy Lee Jones as a cop who goes undercover into home cash games to uncover a drug smuggling business or something. Maybe someone else. I don't know. Colin Farrel? That way at least you could work a hot chick into the movie.

Back to the grind - looks like luck is starting to even out for me. I'm still down $30 from the high point, but I was around minus 50 a few days ago, so it's leveling off. It would help if I could cash in a $5. They have all gone awry.

The MTTs, I'm learning, are 100% total crapshoots. I cashed like 64th place or something yesterday in the $1 tourney. I got unbelievably lucky and unbelievably unlucky all in the same ride. Nice to finally cash in an MTT again though. I will try to give the 7:00pm turbo tourney a shot tonight if I get home in time.

Cue the downswing

So I've lost about $25 over the last few days. I figured something like this was coming, because things were going really, really well. Instead of taking down SNGs, I had a string of third place finishes - just things not going my way deep. I stupidly threw about $6 into two $3 turbo SNGs, one a hyper turbo. Other than that, it's just been finding QQ in spots to raise and running into AA or KK. I could definitely be playing better, but I don't think that I'm playing so horrifically badly or anything. Amidst all of this, I was still able to pull down a $2 SNG.

I'm considering taking a break for a while, although the only reason I wouldn't is because I can still qualify for the one-a-day freeroll this month - (Damn you FTP!!!).

Long day in court tomorrow - gotta get back to the preparation.

Not Shying away from PLO

And I lost like 100BB at PLO last night. Just disaster. Started tilting, felt it, made stabs and pots and lost. Made calls hoping to hit and lost. So lost about 2 bucks.

I was lucky enough to win a $5 SNG after that, though, so it was all moot. We got down to three handed by 40/80. I was the low stack of course, and fought and fought. It looked like they did not want to tangle with me and was able to steal a lot of small pots to chip up. I felt like I was controlling the action at the table. Everyone was pretty deep compared to the blinds, so I was able to play a little poker without having to gamble or put a lot of chips at risk without having the goods. Ended up hitting a big hand (flopped trips to his paired A, I think) to take a massive chiplead going into HU, and then my opponent came all the way back from 1100 to take the chiplead against me.

We got it all in for my tourney life on a nothing flop. I shoved with AQ, and he called with A3, and he had paired his three. On the river I needed a queen and she showed up for me. Interestingly, I hit quads twice in that game.

I then played a $2 SNG with an interesting dynamic. It was 4 handed, and the player to my right was gone. BUT, he had a ton of chips. I was able to steal for quite some time before anyone noticed. The problem is that everytime I stole from the dead guy, my raise would have to pass by the other two guys. They were in a much better spot to steal than me. It took a ton of time to leak all the dead guy's chips out, and I barely hung onto third place.

I had a situation where I had JJ, raised, and got called. Flop comes KJx. We are still 4 handed at this point, knowing the dead guy is not at his computer. We get the chips in there - I think I'm way ahead, but he flips over KK and I am crushed. Luckily, I had my opponent covered and was knocked down to 1k chips or so, and was able to chip back a little bit with some shoves. I think by that point, my opponents knew about the dead guy. And I say I think because even at the end, I wasn't totally sure. They gave him a walk in his BB once, which I thought was strange.

Microstakes Madness

I didn't have a ton of time to play last night because I was scheduled for trial today. The case was totally ridiculous - everyone - the judge, the witnesses, etc. - was willing to cut my client a break except for the DA. A reminder to everyone who thinks that defense attorneys are just simply bad guys - there is some pretty ridiculous conduct on the other side of the aisle. My client basically got 6-months probation, which, in the end seemed like a good deal compared to a trial for two potential felony convictions, but I am still pretty angry about how everything went down. I had a good case. Pretty strong. But you never know what's going to happen at trial.

Back to poker. I played one $2 SNG last night. There was a guy to my immediate right from Serbia who kept open limping pots, and I went over the top of him I think 3 times with AK, AQ, and AQ again, and everyone folded. The fourth time this happens (stupid me), I have JJ, and about 1700 chips. He started the hand with about 1400. It's 6 handed. I forget what the blinds are - maybe 50-100. He open limps in second position I think, I RR to about 35o (whatever the pot was), everyone folds, except this time, he basically min-raises me to 800, so it makes it 450 more for me to go. He's pot committed, and if I just call, I'll be under 1k chips. If I fold, I continue with 1350. But he was showing strength this time, where he previously showed absolutely none. Could this be the time he wakes up with a hand? Of course!

So obviously after thinking about it, I make the wrong decision and reshove, he calls and shows AA and I blank out. SOOOOO SSTTTTEEEEEUUUUUUPPPPEEEEEED.

After that, I tilted in an NLHE HU SNG. Worked up to a 2-1 chiplead with a nice bluff with a paired 3 that I showed. Got all the money in with KQ vs. AK, which I was able to win, and so I got my money back for the SNG.

THEN - I was checking out cash games to see if any big ones were playing, and I noticed a new checkbox filter for "micro" stakes that I had never noticed before. And literally two days after telling my brother that I wish FTP had microstakes games, voila - they're at FTP. I grinded with the max buy in at PLO at the 1/2 cent tables ($2) and made $.50. I flopped top set vs. the nut flush draw and I held, improving to a fullhouse on the river.

I'm glad they added micro cash. This way, I can learn to play NLHE cash games (probably shy away from PLO due to variance - or play it once it a while when I want to gambooool) without having to risk more than I normally would in an SNG. It's a totally different game, and one that I suck at. Maybe I can learn to improve at $2 a pop, instead of $5.

Grapsfan is talking to me - ahahahahaha!

http://www.pocketfives.com/poker-articles/are-you-a-bankroll-nit-3930856

Ok, so one thing that he doesn't account for is the improvement in your opponent's play as the levels go up. I'm at 10% ROI for $2 games, but only 7% ROI for $5 games. I'm even lower than that for $10 games - I'm negative, actually. Some of this may account for the fact that most of my HU games have been played at $2.

Grapsfan assumes that if the BR nit simply moves up in stakes that the nit will therefore be more profitable, and I'm not sure I necessarily agree with that. Take me for instance. I'm a $2-5 grinder and I've got my BR to a level where I will never go broke. According to his numbers, for MTTs, I should play anywhere between $18-$30 buy ins. So let's say an average of $25 (or $26 buyin). Basically, I can play 36 MTT tournies with my BR. That to me is an absurdly low number. Especially where failing to cash in that crucial 36th tourney means I go completely busto. I have gone on tournament droughts like that. With my BR, I am not comfortable playing those levels at all.

I think it's better for grapsfan if people who are used to grinding low stakes move up and take shots at the level that he's playing at, but it's not necessarily better for the grinder.

It is, however, true that I should probably take a shot at a $10 MTT once in a while, but the daily double and midnight madness are just not in my schedule. Maybe $3 MTTs are more my speed.

Jammin' on the 1

So pokerwise, things are not great. Down a couple dollars in a couple weeks, but I haven't really been concentrating.

I have come to grips with the fact that I am not a good HU PLO player, and probably was never much better than average. I can confidently say that the players who play it regularly on FTP are far FAR better than the players who used to. I did have one loss recently where blinds got huge, and my internet cut out on me. that sucked. It was a marathon session, and that was just about the worst way to go. When I got back on, I had already lost.

I've continued to play razz cash, and it has gone well. I know I'm jinxing myself my saying that I've yet to have a losing session. I'm up probably like 10-12 bucks in that game total.

Played the turbo $1 tourneys a few times. The last two times, I think, I got deep and decided to flip relatively close to the money. One time I had a stack and didn't need to, the other, I was relatively low compared to the blinds. Anyway - didn't matter - I lost both and that was that. I seem to keep getting stuck in that spot, and will try to figure out ways to navigate around it either by getting more aggressive before the blinds get to that point, or just trying to be more patient.

The one-a-day freeroll is taking place on Saturday around 2:45pm I think. I looked at the lobby, and it looks like it'll play out like a regular tourney. We'll see how many people actually show. Even if I don't cash in it, it is worth more than the 15 ironman medals. It will also give me a good indication of whether the one-a-day thing is worth shooting for. I'm currently gunning for it this month also.

No sleep till February

I still feel like I haven't fully caught up on sleep yet. Like my body is still decompressing from a traumatic experience. Went out to dinner with the wife at her favorite place. Great meal, familiar surroundings, service is always good. In the end, not an enormous tab for two people (under $100 each).

Great super bowl. Not like most super bowl sundays. Just had the wife's folks over. I woke up super early after having gone to bed about 9-930 the night before. Watched the Australian Open final. Federer is still great, but not the greatest. Nadal has him, but only by a little.

Then around 10 AM I got so ridiculously tired and had to take a nap. Woke up, played some poker, did some shopping. I ended up dozing off during the super bowl! It was hard for me to stay awake. Anyways, I'm glad I did because the game was great. I basically didn't watch the third quarter, played a $2 game and won, and then watched the final stretch.

After losing a (relatively large) amount in the $2 games, I managed to make a bit of a comeback. I am mad at myself for not playing the $1 at 1 more seriously. The wife was basically able to double me up with AK early on, and I ran my stack up to 6k pretty early. Ran into quads in one hand when I held AQ. Thought he might be bluffing me with an A also. Stupid me.

Also lost HU PLO. My HU game in both NLHE and PLO have gone to shit.

Anyways, despite the losses, the BR is still ok. Made some more $ in low limit razz to offset some SNG losses - amazing that I turn a winner in that game.

Like a Movie

My client told me this was all like a movie. I'm not sure if I've ever seen any second of my life that way, but maybe I just have a bad memory or haven't seen enough movies.

Winning doesn't feel nearly as good as losing would have felt bad.

Poker's horrible. Impending doom

I have what is probably going to be the biggest trial of my career on Wednesday, so won't be grinding at the tables too long, and probably won't be playing any games in the $5 zone. Will play some probably late at nights as I have been, maybe the $1 turbo after working, but gotta keep the eyes on the prize.

It's probably tied as the biggest trial because it's the same client as my other big trial, and he was looking at significant jail time after conviction anyway. I have a ton of stuff to do and will probably work through the weekend.

Played the wicked chops freeroll, and it turned out kinda funny. Grinded, grinded, grinded for a while. The field was about 1400 players or so, so I knew it was going to take forever. With 90 left, I was second, and I decided at that point, since I couldn't play the Borgata ME anyway, that I was just done and blew all my chips away.

To be fair, I had said that a few times, shoved with the worst hand, and kept hitting cards, which is the only reason I was in second anyway. It was late, and I either had to work or sleep, so I worked, then slept.

New Sensation

INXS album.

SNGS went badly. That last $5 game I played, I RRAI with JJ pre, and got called by AK, and he flopped a K. Sick of playing the same games, I decided to get stupid. I got in a Razz cash game at the min stakes, sat with $5, got a ton of good cards, and ran it up to $13. It started badly, but got much better, thanks to the cards.

Look, that's nothing for most people, but puts me in the "good day" column when that happens.

Also, HU PLO has been non-existent. Been playing HU NLHE which has been going pretty well (despite the fact I know I'm jinxing myself). Just got lucky the last game. I had KK, raised, he called. Flop is 775, and we get it all in right there. He turns over 55. I hit K on the river. WEEEEE.

Not gonna make myself a cash razz regular or anything, but thought it was fun and interesting to sit at. Definitely going to keep it in mind when I want to switch things up. Hopefully, I don't start playing it willy-nilly, as I have a tendency to do, and have it lose its entertainment value.

Basically, I played $5 - didn't have to throw it all in at any moment, and got to see a lot of cards turn over. Seems like an ok deal.

Playing a super satellite to the 20-20 right now. Buy in is $2, and the top three get the $5.50 buy-in for the satellite. Don't know why I'm playing this. If I get the satellite seat, I will probably just turn it into tourney bucks since I probably won't be able to play the 20/20 anyway.

Trying to Think

Always thought that would be a great name for an album.

I've been wading through the bad beats. Limped with AA once, got two callers, flop is KT3, I bet, raised, all in, he has T3. Stuff like that. I learn my lesson. This is just one big lesson. I won't win every time, but it should be ok, as long as I continue to find the right level of aggression.

Basically been up and down. Should have made bigger scores in the $2 SNGs I've been playing, but again - the bad beats. Playing a $5 right now. Amazing how much more money the $5 games are worth by comparison. And, how much more they suck to lose.

For some reason, FTP's Iron Man calculated that I earned 200 FTP points yesterday. I did not earn close to that much, nor could I, nor did they credit me with those points. Will still try to qualify for the one-a-day freeroll, since I'm very close.

Signed up for a Borgata ME seat in a freeroll that's tomorrow night. It's through wicked chops (thanks guys!). Couple things that kind of suck - even if I win, I will not be able to play in the actual main event due to my trial on Wednesday. Other than that - thanks guys!

I think the runners up get professional DJ headphones, which would probably be awesome for jamming around the kit.
